compact quiet 478 fan/hs

Postby sylvester » Sun Jan 11, 2009 7:17 pm

Got an antec aria case with intel 845grc and 2.8 northwood, intel fan is noisy, not a lot of height due to psu for most fan/hs, around 65mm or 2 1/2 inches any ideas?

Back to the drawing board, fan doesn't fit, the heatpipes are touching the caps, especially one of the pipes which prevents the h/s sitting into the bracket.

Is that the D845GRG board?

If so, it looks like you have very little space to work with sideways. You might want to try something with a venting hole on the side such as seen in some Dell Optiplex models. Look for "1U" cpu coolers, they are usually very flat.

That is what I'm talking about but alas that one seems to be on the loud side and one of the issues with the Intel fan was it loudness, so, we know they are being made, now to find a quiet one.

Another... And another.... And Akasa's offerings....... The bigger the fan, the quieter it is, but bear in mond, PSU's fans tends to be the noisiest in the system...

Thanks for the replies, had looked at some of these but wasn't sure if they would cool a 2.8 northwood in a cramped case, and noise is a factor too. The psu is an antec which is quiet so its really the cpu fan that makes the noise. At the moment I've replaced the original fan with another intel fan that can take up to 3.4 so it seems a little quieter.

Evasive, correct, the mobo is a D845GRG got a D865GLC I need to recap, that's where the C came from in my original post!

I have my doubts whether the "SHURIKEN" is up to being fitted to most 478 boards, it won't fit the D865GLC either.

Some boards have large clearance around the CPU to allow for monster coolers needed for overclockers so I'd check the models aimed at gamers (DFI has some). Intel is not targeting the gaming market IMHO :D

Noise reduction was the aim, still good for solitare though  Latest is the mobo is to be replaced with one out a gx520, maybe the shuriken will fit this time.
