Overclocking P4M laptop?

Postby evil_lurker » Wed Aug 20, 2008 9:14 am

As a few of ya'll know I been looking to go mobile here lately without spending a heap of cash.

While browsing around I found some cheapish refurb laptops the other day specifically a Dell D610 Latitude, so I snagged it.

Anyways, this is obviously an older laptop and it uses the P4M platform with a 1.73ghz CPU @ 533mhz FSB... I was like blech, but it should get the job done.

However, after I got to looking at potential upgrades it turns out those particular P4M's are quite the CPU being able to hang with the "modern" AMD socket AM2 Sempron 3200+!

Not only that, but some of the slower 1.5 and 1.6 400mhz FSB models can be easily overclocked with a simple pin mod to 533mhz without modding the voltage... for a 1.6ghz CPU this would result in bumping up the frequency to 2.13, a 533mhz jump!

So I guess the question are would it be worth the $20 for a chance at an extra 400mhz on the CPU, and has anyone here ever attempted such a feat?
