"Folding@home GPU2 Client Examined"

Postby boheemee » Sat Apr 19, 2008 12:35 am

I found this to be an interesting article even though I don't run any GPU clients. Thought I would share.

Point values for 'standard' WUs has gone down. But the "GPU" versions are very short, albeit low pointers. Check out the huge point values for the GRO-SMP versions!!
I may upgrade to a system that can work those beauties!

I just installed this on my Gaming tower... my 9800GTX SLI rig is going through these like butter... it only uses one of the two cards at the moment, is it possible to run two instances? One Per Card?

Should work nicely, as long as each F@H process has its own unique folder name, and its own start-up link. Ensure you set up the Console commands identically.

I'm going to put off multiple GPU folding until the client officially supports it...

On a side note: My ATI 3850 is getting about 750 per second, while one 9800GTX gets about 2900 per second... granted, different cores that they are crunching, but still... rather large difference. Once I build my file server in a few days, I'm going to put my old 8800GTS 640MB in it, and see what speeds it gets.

There isn't an OS X client yet for this, so the 8800GT in there isn't going to be used for much... meanwhile, the eight cores go to FAH.

Is FAH scores done by the amount of time put in? or the speed at while things are done?

F@H scoring is a somewhat gray area to me. If you are lucky your setup will cut through high-point units like butter, if unlucky it will chew on a relatively low-point unit like forever.

Here is the link to Stanford for currently running projects. Each WU is pre-tested to estimate its run time before being issued. The points and time limits are averaged from several test runs.
If you get a WU finished within 25% or 100% of the minimal time allocated, same point value. If you go beyond the maximum time, you still get points, but not as high as if within the desired time limit.
Some quick WUs are intended only for specific processes (GRO-SMP).. and desired time limits are only 1.5 days to 4 days. But look at the point values! Each one is well over 1,000 points.

I'm using a program called "FahMon" to check on the progress, and it looks like the PPD of my 9800GTX is 5529 (that's just one of the two cards working on FAH) and the PPD of my 3850 is 1219
I'm not sure what the PPD is for the instance of SMP FAH I have running on my Mac Pro, but it only seems to use about 2-cores, instead of 8....

Wow, no wonder I'm slipping down the overall rankings :)
