e4500 on a P5B

Postby chieftex » Tue Jan 29, 2008 1:51 pm

Hello all.

I have a non-stock cpu cooler on my e4500 as im going to try for an overclock. I am also using it on a Asus P5b with 2gb of Corsair DDR2-800.

I am fairly new to this and rather confused - although I have done this kind of thing before.

Say I am aiming for 3ghz - where do i start?

any advice appreciated :)

That chip has an 11x multiplier I believe. Stock is 2.2 GHz, so your FSB = 2.2GHz/11 = 200 MHz. So, 3.0 GHz would require a FSB of 3000 MHz/11 = about 273 FSB.

So, you'd need to bump your FSB to 273 MHz to get a 3.0 GHz overclock. Just raise the FSB a bit at a time and test for stability after each increment*. If you find you're not stable at a certain point, add a little vcore. Watch your temps and you should be okay.

The other thing to pay attention to is your RAM divider/multiplier. If it's set at a 1:1 ratio, then you'll have it running at only 546 MHz at that overclock. No troubles for your RAM (you could quite possibly even tighten the timings in that case). Or, you can use a different divider and get it closer to its rated speed of 800 MHz (A 2:3 ratio would have it running at about 820 MHz with a 273 FSB).

*I'm not familiar with your board, so don't know how far you can go, but I think you should be able to hit 3 GHz without too much trouble.

Hope that helps.
