I have a new build with a 500gb hdd.
i would like to partition it in to 3x 30gb, and the rest (410gb)
C:\ 30gb for Windows XP Pro SP2or3 and programs
D:\ 30gb for Windows Vista and programs
E:\ 30gb fir linux or some future OS (as yet not fully determined)
F:\ 410gb for misc files and stuff (will definately get used)
Sound like a good plan?
And how exactly do i do this?
brand new hdd, should be unformatted.
FAT32 or NTFS (or other)?, Allocation size?
I have never done this before, so i'm not sure exactly how to go about it.
any other suggestions would also be appreciated.
(note i may need to install win98 then upgrade to XP pro(only have xp
upgrade disk)have Vista OEM, Win 95, WIn 98, Win XP Pro SP1 upgrade)
obviously i'll need to update these (Duh!)
BTW How do i dual boot them and switch between them? can they both be running at the same time?  |

That sounds like a good plan. Both FAT and NTFS have there advantages. FAT is easier to deal with across multiple platforms but NTFS is more secure.
If you have a original Win 98 install disk you will not have to install it to install XP. The upgrades have the full version on the disk. All you have to do is start the install for XP and it will ask for your install disk for a previous version of Windows.

Observation: Perhaps some more space for the Vista Partition, it has already proved to be a greedy OS in this department.

Start with no partitions formed on the hdd, and boot to the oldest OS platform that will be installed. Create all partitions as needed, but do not do the install until all are created and formatted. The FAT32 is the 'universal' format, which Windows 98, ME, W2K and XP can easily work with. The NTFS and HPFS are restricted to W2K and XP plus newer platforms.
Linux versions desire their own format type.
It may be best to create two primary OS partitions of at least 60 Gb or larger. There will be need of dedicated programming to that OS type, and it is preferred within the same locale as the OS. Other programming works as well from another partition as if on the primary one.
After the oldest OS platform is installed, then reboot to the newer platform and install that. Trying to install a different OS from an active one will cause endless problems.
