I am so sick of this machine.
T2385 model with Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV integrated graphics.
No slot for a graphics card so I'm stuck.

I don't want to build a completely new machine and am hoping I can get a speedier motherboard and CPU, stick it in and it will work.

What would you folks suggest? I'm a tightwad and don't want to spend major bucks.

Thanks

You might be able to use the ecs goal 3 combo deal from newegg. Comes with a sempron socket 754 3000 cpu. It's about $50 after rebate. Heatsink is extra. It has onboard video, and a separate pci-e slot. But your emachines 250w power supply may not be strong enough to power a separate video card. You also have pc2100 memory. Again, it may not work with this board. But memory is fairly cheap. I've seen pc3200 as low as $5 after rebate for 256 megs. If I were in your shoes, I would wait for Black friday in about 6-7 weeks. You should be able to pick up a complete pc for $199 or less including vista. Fry's has them some years for $99.

Hmm..... I looked and it has some good reviews but seems limited. (I do game) which is going to bring it to a whole new level in price I'm sure.

Thanks

I personally have no love for the "mini" PC cases. Generally dedicated design, with little upgrade option. And the PSU is marginal for what came with it, no reserve for upgrades.
A sound idea would be to sell it off less the hdd, or add a securely wiped one. Look at those "bare-bones" specials at NewEgg.. some are under 100 bucks. You would have to add a hdd, memory and other items, but it would save a lot of do-re-me. The "open-box" specials are also worth considering.
Go with a mid-tower or full-tower design. That way you can always do an upgrade however you want.
You also may find something on eBay.. IBM does have mATX mobos that may fit.. and there are PSUs in the 400 watt category for mini cases.
Check the feedback.. the higher the better, and the percentage of that. This way you are assured of dealing with a reputable seller.

I suggest shopping at www.newegg.com for the following items.

- New Motherboard. Preferably a Socket AM2 for use with...
- New AMD Socket AM2 CPU
- New RAM, minumum of 1GB (1024mb). Ensure it's compatible with motherboard.
- New Power Supply. Look for something decent in the 400watt to 500watt range. Ensure it's compatible with the motherboard.

An optional item would be a new ATX case. It may make it easier to install the new components and transplant your old hardware (Hdd, DVD, CD-RW & etc.).

This can be done on a buget of $400 U.S. dollars or less.

Here are some suggestions. The motherboard I selected has two IDE Connections so you should be able to connect all your drives.

ASUS M2V-MX AM2 VIA K8M890 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ Brisbane 2.1GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 65W Processor - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103774

Or shop for an AMD Socket AM2 CPU of your preference.

CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Desktop Memory - Retail

Thermaltake TR2 W0070RUC ATX 430W Power Supply 115/230 V - Retail

Sincerely,
MrCraigCraig

P.S. An article about your T2385 is available at the link below.

ASUS K8N, AMD Sempron 3100+(1.8ghz), 1gb RAM, eVGA 5500FX 256mb AGP, two WD120gb SATA drives in RAID 0 (striping), 450w power supply.

Fold well, so that others may prosper.
