Creating an Updater

Postby ThEvil0nE » Tue May 01, 2007 8:24 am

I'm lost and have no clue whatsoever. I've been scouring google to find out something but I can't seem to get one in my head.

Here's what I'm trying to do...

I'm hoping to creat an application that would run and search for an updated version and data before the main application would run. The are two things that needs to be updated... the *.exe and the "Data" folder.

I'm not sure if I'm clear enough but I am sure that I need help... alot!

Something like installshield or wise installer stuff I guess. What are you trying to achieve? We might even be able to use a dumb batch file...

Here's what I'm trying to do:
RK-RO Client Version 1.0b is the installer I made that contains and installs the client program and the "data" folder.

As you can see below... I already have 2 updates made for the data.
http://www.rk-ro.com/downlaod.html
They have to download and manually update their data (which I want to elliminate with an updater utility)

The updater would run and compares the files on the data folder and the ones on an ftp site. If new versions of data are located, the updater/utility would auto download and update the target directory. One note to consider tho... the utility should pinpoint the target files on the users computer regardless of where they have installed the client and data folder.
