I need to display the list of users who are connected to a SharePoint Portal Server 2003 portal just like the one in the Who is Online section of this forum. This list is going to be displayed in a corner of the portal home page.
Anyone has an idea to start with?

What I really want to know is if there is an easy way to do it without writing a web part? Is it something built in SpS or I have to do it myself? The current portal uses windows authentication and heard one can't use sessions in SpS. is it true?
btw it has to work independent from messenger or communicator like most examples in web out there.

I do not have personal experience with SharePoint products. My best suggestion is search google or contact the vendor that provided your portal.

I found out that there is no built in option unless you integrate msn messenger or office communicater in your portal. So i had to write a web part to do the job.
Done it taking the example at http://blogs.sqlxml.org/bryantlikes/articles/592.aspx as reference.
Works just fine.
