CPU temperature

Postby Ilisidi » Fri Dec 22, 2006 6:48 pm

What is the optimal CPU temperature? My new build seems to be running a little hot. In BIOS the readings start at 57C for CPU and 40 for board and within 10 minutes they climb to 65 (CPU) and 52 (board). When I finish booting, the board monitoring software tells me CPU tem is55.
Is this ok?

-273.15C

Seriously, if it isn't giving errors, leave it be. People freak out of temps too much. Those sensors are hardly accurate anyway.

If it starts rebooting or programs start crashing, then we'll look at a possible cooling issue. If you're really worried, open it up and dust out the HSF. Then reapply thermal paste. If its a new build, make sure you didn't leave the plastic on the thermal pad.

Ok, thanks. I guess I am a little freaked out, but it's my first "baby". If it won't work, I'll never hear the end of it :D

So I guess mine running at -275C is a bit on the chilly side? :P

Not sure if you knew this, and that is the joke you made, but -273.15C is 0k, or as cold as anything can possibly be.

The point of 0° K. can never be reached! -273.15°C. is about as close as can be achieved.

Reference 2:

All aside, it is preferred that a CPU run in the range of 35°C. to 45°C. but up to 55°C. is acceptable, when heavy data processing is done. Going beyond 60°C. may cause thermal limiters to become active, causing the CPU to slow or shut down. There are some refrigerant-type CPU coolers that maintain a temp of around 10°C. and the CPU does work very efficiently. But the cooling process is power-hungry!
