Looking for a flat panel display, in the 19" - 21" up to $500 category (although I'd prefer spending much less than that )
Planning on a lot of gaming. Currently have a GeForce 6600 AGP card but am planning on building a PCI-E system in the next couple months. Probably not SLI to cut down on costs a bit, thinking of a GeForce 7000 series card (hopefully a single 7950GX2 but I'll see when the time comes ) |

Dell doesn't make those panels. You can get the same thing from other manufacturers (since Dell will just buy the panel off someone like Samsung and stick it in their cabinet) without having to pay for the name. Something like BenQ and Viewsonic are the same quality without the hefy price tag. _________________

I can vouch for the Viewsonic LCDS. Stunning screens, decent pricing and if I recall correctly: a 3 year warranty (as with most manufacturers) _________________ -dve83- Folding for 33258

| I have a 19" Dell ultrasharp and just got my wife a Samsung 20" 204b and both are very nice. The Samsung was about $350 as was the Dell a year ago. Almost got her a nice NEC with a glossy screen, but she was taken back by the glare she might have. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder so would just advise looking at screens before buying. I also like the idea of some having usb ports, but no speakers unless you really don't have room. |

I have an NEC 1770GX and have no issues with glare, nor do I have any issues with the LCD of any kind. Very happy with my choice. To each his or her own. |

General "common wisdom" on this subject that I've collected from many posts:
* Samsung makes the best overall LCD screens -- lowest incidence of dead pixels. (We use these at the office.)
* Viewsonic builds monitors with the fastest panels for the money. Personally, I run two VP191b's (since replaced by another model number) and they are spectacular for gaming.
* Benq makes the best value LCD monitors of all mid-line brands. I have two Benqs in service at home (T903s) and they are 85% the Viewsonics for probably 50% the cost.
Two other thoughts:
* If you're going to run LCDs for gaming, it's best to have a video card with DVI output, although it is not necessary.
* The larger the screen, the lower the refresh rates for the $$$ AND the less proven the model. You should probably back off by one inch from the "latest" monitor in the market to get the best purchase experience.
Hope this helps. |
