Hi, after assessing my meagre student finances it has become apparent that a 64bit system is out of my immediate price range so i would like to overclock my existing pc.

Im running

ahtlon xp 2500+ (with heatsink and fan)
1 gig ram
asus a7n8x-x mobo
windows xp
xfx force graphics card (not a high spec one)

I read about the pencil trick for athlon chips and wondered if that was the best place to start?

also i can set my ram for aggressive, is that wise?

any tips or advice greatfully recieved as my pc seems sluggish in the extreme!

cheers, Tobyone

what core is your processor?
what is it clocked at?
what type of ram do you have?

im sure we can drain some more power out of it just need to know what we are dealing with wink

well id start with small increases with your fsb, multiples of 3 should be right, umm what graphics card do you have?

also defaging your pc every so often will keep things running smooth.

your barton may be locked, so dont mess with the multiplier

hi, the cpu has a barton core (dont know what its clocked at) and the ram is ccl budget special ram (2 x 512). its not the best ram and im willing to upgrade if it makes a noticable difference.

will have to check what the graphics card is, although im willing to upgrade that too if it makes the difference. its an xfx tv out, with 128 ram i think.

how do you adjust the fsb?
and is the pencil trick messing with the multiplier?

cheers, T

cool, is there anywhere to find 'safe' amounts to overclock with? also is there anything possible with the ram...i wondered as it was mentioned in an earlier posting.

cheers, T

ok, i looked in the bios and couldnt find anything to adjust the bios. i changed the settings from optimal to aggresive and the pc wouldnt even load to bios!

i removed the soundcard and it booted normally. i changed the bios setting back to optimal and it worked fine with the sound card reinserted.

what should i look for to change the bios settings?

cheers, T
