In a report by Extremetech, it is revealed that Via's S3 graphics division is going to take an open swing at ATI, particularly the X600.
They are preparing to offer their own card to directly compete with the X600 in features. This card will be called the GammaChrome S18 PCIe and will be debuted at the Intel Developer Forum later this week. Features will inlude four vertex pipelines, SM2.0, 500mhz core clock, and 450mhz clock on standard DDR memory. Low power qualities will also sell this item as it runs at a modest 12 watts.
The card pushes almost 2000 points on 3DMark05, which is not something to laugh at. Executives hope that the card will re-establish the brand so they can move forward to deal a few more blows. They did say that the X600 was the first (not only) target. _________________

12 watts, yeah right, when its in hibernation or at no load?
.. impossible even for cards from 6 years ago at load.
New ATI and Nvidia run at load from 40 to 100 watts on average, I think the numbers are construded. my case fans uses that much (12 watts) at boot.. |

Okay.. so they're taking a shot at the X600's market share.. Noone buys X600's anyway, so why would they buy this new card that hasn't even been tested in the real world? _________________

Precisely why this is so appealing to the end consumer. Can you imagine the possibilities in the mobile market? _________________

Wow, if that power consumption figure is accurate, I'll definitely want to start using their cards (assuming performance is relatively decent). _________________

This would be a great budget, and supporting the underdog is always a good idea. 12 volts would be astouding. _________________ "We must embrace pain and burn it as fuel for our journey." |
