Just recieved an E-Bay $175 special, a Dell Lattitude LM, and preditably, there are problems. It will not boot fron c:, floppy, or CDRom. Unlikely thet all three are trashed, more likely the Bios is. problem: how do I flash the bios if I cannot boot to floppy? Is it possible via the parallel port? My favorite town techie said the only solutiuon is a new motherboard, and probably he is correct, but just before I go and buy one I thought I would tap into the collective wisdom out there.
any ideas anyone?

Just as the other three on-board thingies, you need a functioning bios for the parallel port. Not an option. Congrats on getting a nice shiny laptop case with hopefully functioning screen.

Welcome to the Mother Board!
See if you can "clear" the CMOS on the mobo first before replacing it. Also replace the battery for the laptop itself as that will be havoc with the system as well even if it's plugged in to AC.

OK, so how do I clear the CMOS settings? (as you can see, I am on the steep part of the learning curve)
Also, Even if I replace the mobo, this may well not solve the problem. What is the most likely cause of the BIOS corruption? Static charge? voltage spike?, defective power supply?

If it is a "socketed" CMOS battery. you will need to remove the battery from the motherboard to clear CMOS. As this board does not have a jumper to clear CMOS.
where this is a laptop computer you will need to remove the battery pack as well as unplugging the unit from the wall.

One other point.
During the boot, two of the messages displayed are
"System BIOS shadowed"
"Video BIOS shadowed"
Does this mean like ghosted, or stored soamwhere that I can recover it from? |
