There has been a little about serial ATA on the following:The off-shoot is that it works and that it works well; however, the really big advantage at the moment is cable management rather than performance. The problem is that all the new serial controllers are doing old-fashioned parallel-to-serial conversion, connecting the neat new trim cable, then doing serial-to-parallel conversion again, and finally, connecting to parallel ATA 133 drives. Serial ATA is going to be rolled out in four phases:
  • Serial ATA 150 - double-converted from/to parallel ATA 133
  • True serial ATA 150
  • Serial ATA 300, and, finally,
  • Serial ATA 600
It is going to work and it will work very, very well. But practical implementation is probably next fall/winter rather than the upcoming one.
