Postby Wookie8662 » Tue Nov 04, 2003 4:02 pm

If its a "pre-release", why is it being released? 8O

The prerelease version 4.00 client is available here for download if you wish to try it out! The program incorporates numerous changes, listed in the Change log. The client will be made available on the main download page after prerelease testing is completed. View the Beta F.A.Q..

I'll check it out later tonight on one of my machines.

Started Use. Added the -forceSSE flag, and was a smooth transition - it picked up the work right where 3.25b left off (isn't it a big jump in version #s... .75?)

Well, to anybody who is going to use this, make absolutely sure you add the -forceSSE flag to your roster.

Other nice features - 8 machine IDs per client,
- Configurable minimum checkpointing frequency (3-30 minutes). (In GUI, controlled
with a slider.)*
- If client run with verbosity of at least 5, FahCore_78 will print out a
message whenever a timered checkpoint occurs.*
- -configonly flag added to configure then exit.
- -oneunit flag added to exit after completing one unit.
- -forceSSE flag added. Returns -forceasm to its former meaning of forcing
assembly generally, and takes on the function of forcing SSE specifically.
- Warnings printed if -forceasm/-forceSSE flags given.
- Benchmarking not done except at start of normal operation (for example,
not if only configuring, listing queue, deleting unit, etc.).
- Warning if attempt to run client with Machine ID of already running client (catches
most common cases, including if running same client twice)
- Web site printed updated.
- Upon finishing a unit, if fails to return the result but succeeds in
getting new work, immediately tries sending all results again.
- Checks user name and team number for legality of use in statistics. (In
GUI, gives popup error).
- Queue info properly outputted to FAHlog.txt.
- "Ask before connecting" change on Linux -- ignores typeahead and asks for "C"
- Proxy password written out in binary (upon reconfiguration)
- Assignment/work server request authentication
- Send all message altered ("sent x of y" if x not 0, or "no units...")
- CPU usage default of 100 printed out during Configuration.
- Tags in MyFolding page changed to better adhere to HTML standard
- Maximum machine IDs raised to 8.
- Upload and download bandwidths estimated to send to AS.
- If fails to post data, includes server and port in message. Also outputs
HTTP status code (before this was only done if I.E. settings used).
- Bug fixed where performance fraction could exceed 1.

On an editing spree here, but, this is what the log file tells you about enabling flags now...

Warning:
By using the -forceSSE flag, you are overriding program
safeguards that monitor the stability of SSE
instructions on your system. If you did not intend
to do this, please restart the program without
-forceSSE. If work units are not completing fully,
then please discontinue use of the flag.

Warning:
By using the -forceasm flag, you are overriding
safeguards in the program. If you did not intend to
do this, please restart the program without -forceasm.
If work units are not completing fully (and particularly
if your machine is overclocked), then please discontinue
use of the flag.

Doesn't seem bad to me, how bout you?

There's the occasional speed boost, but otherwise, no different except the few customization tags. Any differences on your end guys?

you guys had better join the beta team (you'll have to ask), as this is not released to the general public.

btw, where did you get this info?

also, i sent a pm to bruce, the site administrator at FAH forums regarding this, and i would believe that removing links to the pre release version will have to be made.

here's rule 11 from the beta team:

# 11. Recruiting for the beta team is allowed as long as you make sure that:

# They know and agree to the requirements for beta team.
# You DO NOT discuss anything in your team forum other than the basic recruitment speech.
# Any help that they need they are to come to this forum to get. Please do not help them in your forum, by PM, IM, AIM, ICQ, or any others as we need them to come here and get comfortable with the group and posting here.

so if you guys become a part of the beta team, accept the risks involved (crashes, lock ups, lost data, ect...), you're required to post logs of any errors, and report any strange behaviors. discussion is to be focused specific to the issues only, and general discussions other than beta testing are to be avoided. brief, and effective, w/ o unnecessary fill. there is another rule that is important:
12. Team attitudes and memberships should be checked at the door when entering this forum. This is the Beta Team and all other team stuff should not come up in this forum.

btw, i missed this thread yesterday, as i was busy w/ chores and downloading some linux distros (and burning to disk w/ o surfing) for specific testing. i had some 71pt tinkers that were in need of completion, so that kept me away from any testing. they don't want any deletion of wu's, so i had to let them finish. it's a bigger deal, as i'll reformat, and install some distros that previously were problematic w/ the 3.25beta console for linux. i'll assume that there will be more risk involved as well. i'm actually contemplating putting a 20gig hdd in one machine, and doing a multiboot config for multiple distro testing. this will require some extra time, as the hdd is used by a different comp. i can see this not happening untill the weekend, esp. as i have the day off, and have ignition work to do on my van, as well as some exhaust work....
