I am building a prototype server. Intel will provide a beta MOBO that uses dual Itanuim 2's. I have a couple friends at Intel
I will provide feedback to Intel on performance and issues. As part of the testing, I am considering "folding". Does anyone have questions, comments, or concerns? Any feedback would be helpful.
I will let everyone know when the machine is up and what the status is.
Of course, I will be part of this team.

Although the Itanium2 is not new and servers with as many as 64 processors are running, the system I am building with be based on the Itanium2 with 6MB L3 cache, 128bit wide 400mhz bus, and quad channel RD style memory in the 1GHz range. Technical specs on some of the components can not be shared but, rest assured I will share what I can.
A 4 processor system is in the works and I plan to be part of that also........I LOVE POWER!

This sounds excellent. When do you think that baby will be ready? I am sure if you keep the F@H client running on it, you will be able to catch up even DefaultDave in no time. Anyway, welcome aboard and don't forget the team number 33258 when configuring the software. That's very important. Thanks for joining.

it would be great except for one thing- Stanford more than likely does not have a 64bit itanium coded client. they don't have any amd 64 bit clients as well. surely you must have a less amazing system that you can run folding on (32bit x86 cpu based)?

I don't it really matters len. All those new technologies are backward compatible. I am sure the FAH client will work on those system except they will not perform at full performance. It will fall back to 32 bit system performance. The amd 64bit and intel 64bit technologies are both design to handle both 32bit and 64bit programs.

I hate to burst your bubble with a nailgun here but: Itanium processors will emulate 32 bit code, and do it damn slow. For this system, it may fold badly. You may need to contact stanford and request the creation of a 64 bit client. Then, get others to do the same.

from what i've seen at the FAH forums, it's not going to happen anytime soon.one of the administrators there made a statement that 64bit cpu's are a very small segment of the population, and due to this will not likely see anything for it!?!

btw, you have to complete a wu as a part of the joining process. enter your nickname, and team #33258 in the configuration before the wu is completed and handed in.

this does appear to be true. not sure of how well they will perform. a relatively simple recompile (from what i hear- how true???) is all that's needed for the amd cpu's. if that were the case, then Stanford should put out a version for those cpu's. this would put amd ahead of intel, and intel has contributed to the project in the past, so politics has to be involved.

I COULD dedicate an old server to the task 24/7, a Pentium PRO 200mhz 256k cache. The cpu has excellent throughput even though it is considered relatively slow by today's standards.

Note: this Pentium PRO has benchmarked faster than a PIII @ 700mhz. Just lacks multimedia capabilities. Rock solid though.
