I usually got an idle temp of about 39-40 degrees, but after i got folding@home and run it for a long time the temp reaches 52-53 degrees. is this too hot for the processor? will it wear down fast?

yea F@H has to do its work. safe you say? well, ok. At what temp do things start looking bad for the CPU (like wearing it down)

temps are a little high. make sure to add case fans if possible. another thought is the sensors might be off, giving a false elevated reading. better to err on the side of caution, and add case fans if possible. (IMHO)

are athlons more sensitive to heat? i just thought they produced more than p4s

Thats not too bad a temp, considering the client will use all the available CPU cycles when you're not using the PC at the time.
I have had my P3-1000 up over 50C when running Seti@Home, but it was overclocked to 1160Mhz (155Fsb).
I ran it for 3 years, and its still running in another machine.
You say that after running "a long time", the temp goes up.
Try running for a day, with the side of the case removed, and see what the temp reaches. It may just be lack of airflow through the case.
In that situation, the CPU cooler is reusing warm/hot air from inside the case, and cannot do as good of a cooling job as if it had cooler air from outside the case.

I think you've got it around the wrong way there Tulatin, it is unusual for P4's to run into the 50's, except possibly for the higher speed grades with less than perfect cooling, but it is quite common for Athlons to run at that temp or even higher under full load.
Athlons are "safe" up to 85 degrees however it is preferable to try and keep them below 55 degrees and definately best to keep them under 60 degrees if at all possible.
I have an Athlon 1333 that has been hitting 60+ degrees and an overclocked Barton 2500+ that has been going close to 60 degrees over the past couple of days because we are having a run of very hot & extremely humid days here.
While I don't find these temps alarming considering the circumstances both of these machines are in line for some attention to cooling if I am going to continue folding through what looks like being a long & very hot Aussie summer.
It continues to amaze me that nobody ever asks what the ambient temperature is whenever somebody posts about a suspected high CPU temp. As soon as somebody says their CPU is running at over 50 degrees they are told that it is too hot but if it's 40 degrees in the shade out side then a 50 degree CPU temp is pretty bloody amazing isn't it?
