Hiya folks on an old rig i'm working on at the moment the mobo reports idle temps of around 50 to 51c should they be that high?

The rig is as follows
amd 2600xp (non barton)
asus a7v400-mx mobo
768mg legend ddr 400
geforce 256 mg 5700 se vid card
Thermaltake volcano 10 heat sink with 2* 2600rpm fans on it

50c at idle seems far too high! Whats it like under full load?

Can I assume youve already looked at the HS/F and thermal paste/pad for any bad fittings or irregularities?

ASUS are known for their bad reporting of temps, so it could be just a BIOS issue. But it could also be a faulty sensor on the motherboard.

Does the system have any noticeable lag/slowness when running, which may indicate overheating?

yeah looked at all the thermal pads etc. Even with the asus windows reporting tool it says the same temps. All the thermal pase etc wsa replace only like 5 days ago. Under full load it can reach as high as 60+ if it's a warm day say 25-28 ambient it will reach anything over 65c which isa why i have the c.o.p set to 65.
Yeah the system does have quite abit of lag when it heats up.

well got some bad news, the rig decided to fry the motherboard today :(
It let out a pop and then some smoke :( I'm figuring it was a electrical surge more then heat issues though. Aww well a used xp goes to the big scrap heap in the sky

Sad news indeed, aussiejunior. Sorry to hear about your woes, and you didn't even get to solve your heat issue. Perhaps you could swap out a component or two (ones that give off the most heat, IE: video card) and see if the temp goes down?

yeah it woulda been nice to solve the prob but the comp is now running a 3200 64bit amd which even with a 10% overclock still hasn't hit 45c with stock cooling and all the same componets cept the mobo of course.
