Toasty Athlon 2100+ !

Postby Twisty » Sun Feb 12, 2006 4:56 pm

I have just thrown together a puter with using a MSI KM3M-V and Athlon 2100+ (Model 6), I know these processors run hot but this one is doing 52C idle!
I can not find a utility to display the CPU temp in windows but did set BIOS to shut down at 65C and after a couple of minutes of running the Prime 95 torture test the computer does switch off.

Is the 0.18um 2100+ just insanely hot?

Has anybody else run this board? If so is the BIOS temperature reliable?

It does not seem to matter what cooler I use, I junked the Akasa AK-785 the processor came with straight away for a spire SPA04S4-U. I replaced the fan on this twice for a 2500rpm, then a 3300RPM one (80mm) which didnt appear to make much difference. I also tried a Thermaltake M.I.T, which probably lasted the torture test a few seconds longer (but the 6500RPM fan tortured me as well).
I have now left the Building :tongue8:

I put same CPU+heatsink on an Abit KW7 that I just bought and got temps of about 30C, so I suspect the MSI board is reporting temps that are way to high.

I put the CPU back into the MSI board with a gigabyte 3D ultra this time just for good measure :)

I do have an AXP 2000+ Palomino core and temps are between 48-52C on full load depending on the ambient temp. I think your MSI board has a problem on showing the correct temps.
