Retail 3700 fan/heatsink good enough?

Postby mattr33 » Fri Nov 04, 2005 6:22 am

I'm upgrading and going to buy a AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego 1GHz (along with new MB, video card, etc...).

I've read that this 939 chips run cooler, but I cannot find what they are referencing. Is it to Intel chips or older AMD chips (like my Barton 2500+).

As you can see from my sig I run a Silentboost HSF w/AS5 for the thermal paste. Idle is around 42deg C, and load is around 47deg C (running Battlefield 2).

Do you think temps for my new 3700 will be around the same?

Is the AMD supplied (retail) heatsink/fan combo good enough? What about the thermal pad? Should I clean it off and just apply some Arctic Silver?

One last question... How long is Arctic Silver good for? I've got a tube I bought 2 years ago and only used it for that one build so I've got a ton left.

Thanks,
Matt

If you're not overclocking the stock is fine, if it wasn't why would they supply it?

The new chip will run about the same temps as present, maybe less. I have a feeling the silent boost won't fit the 939, but I'm not sure.

Like Rob said the retail hs&f and thermal pad work well even up to moderate overclocking.
Your temps should be a little lower than the 2500 Barton even with the aftermarket hs&f you have.

I have tubes of Arctic Silver that are 4 years old and they still work as advertised, so I wouldn't worry abou it, even though I couldn't find any info about it's shelf life. 8)
