Silver foil on heat sink!

Postby Twisty » Mon Oct 24, 2005 3:12 pm

I have just reseated my flatmates P4 1.7Ghz HSF with artic silver. The existing compound had not been applied correctly and POST temps are now down from 55C to 35C!

A square of soft metal (prob aluminium) foil appeared to be stuck to the intel heatsink where I would usually expect to find the usual grey pad. I wanted to peel it off but the owner insisted it was kept; temps seem to be OK now anyway.

The question is what is this silver foil stuff? Is it just a different type of thermal pad? I would appreciate any enlightenment.

I've run into those before. It's a thermal pad, but the thermal stuff has dried up and gone away.
Nothing really wrong with keeping the aluminum square on there, but I remove 'em, clean up the botton real good and just use AS3 or 5. 8)
