A question of Sound

Postby ~Rob » Wed Feb 04, 2004 7:14 pm

Just a general ponder, but if I have a 20dB fan and add another, is the total noise now 40dB???

Also, am I right in thinking that for every 1dB increase it is 10x louder? I heard it somewhere but I might have been dreaming.

Thanx in advance

Youre right about the 10X louder part, but as for the sound "adding up" I dont really think so. It could be tho.

Cheers mate. I was more unsure about the 10x bit and I'm not 100% on the adding but I can hear my noisy fan over the others so maybe not.

me confused, I'm just going to be adding about 3-4 new fans, hopefully around the 20dB mark and that would make 60-80dB louder than it is now!!

They do add up, but it's a veery small increase. The biggest increases will come from things blocking airflow - after all - notice how much louder case fans are when put on those damn stamped out sections versus on they're own?

Tru, tru.

I will be hacking about my case + PSU soon just to stop air resistance. Bloomin annoys me that!!

What increase will I get by adding another fan of the same loudness??

Something like .1 db - not a whole hell of a lot. As to the hacking, i used wire cutters to remove stamped grills before - very painful, use tin snips!

Just had a look at the back of the case and the PSU will come apart easy, but the rear fan has loads of 2mm holes. Did they want to make it noisy?? That I'll probably leave alone!!

The front as far as I remember is the same, but a spring clean is called for. Maybe next weekend!!!
