Newbie Question on Temp

Postby avenger49 » Wed Jul 10, 2002 5:24 pm

Just built a P4 2.26 with GigaByte 8IEXP mobo using stock heatsink and fan with Antec Silver Thermal Compond (I know, it's not the same as Arctic Silver, but I couldn't wait).

This system is not overclocked and my CPU temps are around 46 degrees Celcius while idle and around 56 degrees Celcius under full load. Are these temps too high or are they about normal?

Also would like to point out that my CPU fan is only moving at 1280rpm. Now to me, that seems pretty slow, but I thought that I would ask somebody else, so is that too slow?

Appreciate the help.

Gigabyte 8IEXP
512 MB Samsung RAM
Maxtor 80 GB HD
Geforce 2 Pro

Ouch. Thats pretty hot. I hear good old Tolemac likes the P4s to stay under 50C while under load. What case do you have? Is there adequate ventilation?

I'm using Chieftec/Antec 1030 Server Case. Seems to have adequate ventalation. I'm currently using 3 case fans (two in rear, one up front) and using Antec True380 power supply with dual fans.

how about that cpu cooler? what is it and why is it running at only 1280 rpms? most cpu coolers run between 5-7 thousand rpms.

the cpu cooler sounds like your problem

I have a p4 1.6a o/c @ 2.2 and i get 39c idle and 48c underload and I use a stock heatsink/fan. I am using Artic silver 3 tho that migth eb the difference. Try using AS3 instead and see if the temps go down. Also what is the ambient temperature ?

The heatsink and fan are Retail and I really don't have any idea why the CPU fan is only spinning at 1280 rpm.

Do you have the HSF hooked up to the mobo, or directly to the power supply? If it's hooked up to the mobo, make sure that the BIOS isn't running the fan at a set speed. If you can hook it up to the PSU directly, then do that.
The Antec Thermal paste is ok, but that's all. Get the Arctic Silver III and you will get lower temps. Make sure that the HSF is seated correctly on the CPU as any off-set will incure higher temps. You could always get a better HSF. The retail Intel HSF's are better than the retail AMD fans, but I still prefer an after-market one like the Volcano 7+. 8)
