How big should the PS be? Case light problem

Postby CPanther1995 » Wed Apr 23, 2003 12:14 am

First of all, here's my rig:

P4PE mb fully loaded
P4 2.4B c1 processor w Thermaltake Spark 7 at 5400 rpm
4 led lighted Antec fans, approx 2500 rpm's ea
SB Audigy card
Albatron TI4800V video card
80 gig main drive, 40 gig 2nd drive
16X dvd drive
40x12 CDRW drive
430 watt Antec True Power Supply

I haven't had 1 problem with this ps. It's been great. I tried to add 2 cold cathode case lights tonight, a 2 light UV black light PCToys set from Compusa. I tried to cut in on after I cut the computer back on and the power dropped big time on my Thermaltake CPU fan, and on all my case fans. I cut it off immediately. Voltage, according to the box is 620V.
The 2 lights are wired together.

I figured that this 430 watt ps could handle the lighted case fans and a cold cathode or 2. Is something wrong with the PS, or am I trying to put too much in here at 1 time.

Are the fans on the same molex connector as the fans? IF not, Your PSU cannot provide enough voltage/amperage to handle this load-out.

the 2 CCL's were chained to the 4 lighted fans.

Every Molex line I have is connected to something.

The only line I didn't use is a 12v only line marked fan only. It didn't provide enough juice to run the lighted fans, but will it work running a light or 2 only? I may try it.

Would it be safe to hook the lights in line with the dvd and cdrom drives, or to the line connected to the hard drives?

The thing is, your 12v line on your power supply may be too weak to support 4 cathodes. Go into your bios and check the voltage for 12v. If its below 10, then your PSU needs upgrading (I'd go 450+w, enermax)

Here's my votage readings, according to PC Probe:

12V+ 11.968

5v+ 4.999

3.3V+ 3.296

VCore 1.616

The Antec fans don't have a built in Y connector, the molex is a pass through type, but I ended up hooking the fans together on the same line, not daisy chained. I read elsewhere that could be my problem, because I hooked the lights into that line.

I ordered 6 molex y splitters from pcmods.com today ( .99 ea vs 5.00 at Compusa) and a black vantec Nexus fan controller. All of this together will help me set up my molex connections better and make room for a new light.

I'm also taking this black light set back to the store, there may be a short in the inverter. Now I can decide if I want to stick with a UV light, or go with a blue CCL. I started a whole new post in this forum asking everyone's option abotu what colors I should go with. Check it out.

You'll also want to run 2 lights to an inverter.
