homemade ramsinks from a Geforce2MX cooler??

Postby charibdis » Sat Nov 23, 2002 12:32 pm

I'm thinking of making ramsinks from the old heatsink off of a Geforce2MX (had no fan). The ramsinks would go on my Radeon 8500LE in order to help keep the ram running cooler if I try overclocking it higher than it is now.

I may be attempting the mods with the resistors and all found on the web. and I want better cooling for the card. most ramsinks I've seen aren't available to me ie: no distributor here and exchange from the US is insane! (tweakmonster is the one I was looking at) So I'm going with a homemade solution. Should work great. I had seen mods with brass pipe couplings but somehow I don't feel like that would be good ennough (less fins for dissipation)

As for the VPU cooling I was thinking of popping it off and cutting an old Athlon XP1800+ cooler I have. That is unless I can file it down to fit as is, which would offer massive cooling compared to the little fan that's on there right now.) Although I am running the core at 300MHz with very little heat difference. I'd rather be on the safe side, Cutting it would also make sure it stays attached properly as it's considerable heavier. (although thermal adhesive should hold it in place quite well. it is aluminium after all.)

So, how is it coming? I'd like to see some pics of your work.

well thusfar I'm still debating if the geforce2 cooler would be ennough or if I should cut an old Pentium heatsink. More surface area to disipate the heat.

And well I can't really afford a brand new card (well I could but I don't want to if I don't have to) A friend of mine woudl do the soddering as I shake way too much to do any of that.

I'm still not 100% sure on how to proceed with the HSF for the core. It's eithter cut it down completely and find a different fan for it or to file it down. I don't have the tools at hand which sucks. I dunno if a dremmel would be good for that. although I could probably use a drill. Gives me an idea. Hmmmm..... I'll have to look at things more thouroughly and make measurements. I also have to doublecheck how I'm gonna attach the bloody thing!.

As far as pics go. I'll see if I can get my bro to loan me his digital camera, otherwise I'll use my good old camera and try and find a scanner somewhere I can use.

If you can find one many of the 1U coolers will fit quite nicely on the GPU. This would save effort on your part trying to lower the profile. Most are approximatley 25mm high(15mm hs ,10mm on the fan), which means you do lose the adjacent slot (PCI) but in most apps you dont use it anyway.
The 1U coolers are fairly easy to come by here so not sure of what you would find there.
Just another idea.. :D

you know that's not a bad idea. I hadn't thought of that. I was just checking ways to cut down costs. If it's cheap I may look into it. Right now I'm sorta putting the project on hold due to christmas being so close. But whenever I get the chance I'll get it done. Maybe I'll be able to set the vise in place at my parents place so that I can do it there.
