vid card power requirements?

Postby sv07 » Wed Jan 09, 2008 1:53 pm

Building a new rig, but I have a stupid question.

My anticipated power supply is rated at 17amps on the 12v rail.
The vid card I'm looking at says it recommends 18 amps.

Is this really a problem?

PSU -Antec Eartwatts EA380 ... 6817371005

Vid- EVGA GeForce 7600 GT 256mb ... 6814130062

Thanks in advance for any input.

I would upgrade your PSU up to a minimum of 450W. Most systems now days require a 500W PSU or better.

The card itself doesn't demand all that power. The amount stated takes into account that other devices will draw power from the source, and it is advised to have the stated minimal limit. The actual power drawn by the video card may only be around 5~8 amps.
A definite advantage in having a PSU with greater wattage than needed. It is a good reserve, and will regulate more efficiently. A PSU will never "push" more power to a mobo than it requires. Unless, of course, it is under-sized and fails to regulate properly!
