I haven't overclocked before....Is it safe??

It is relatively safe, if done properly. Issues such as excess heat must be taken into consideration.
This is a basic rule of physics.. more power in for faster speed, also more waste heat as a result!
Memory type may need an upgrade. Certain CPU voltages may need tweaking.
