popups and spyware- STILL HAVING TROUBLE

Postby donald » Wed Apr 13, 2005 9:21 am

I am having trouble connecting to the internet using my dsl because as soon as I switch on popups show up all over. This is a new build and I haven't had time to install any spyware search because of this problem, it also causes internet explorer to stop responding, please help.

I would definately get an anti-virus and 2 or more anti-spyware apps (no 1 app seems to catch them all), update them as soon as you get them installed and run full system scans on each. I would suggest Ad-Aware and Microsoft Anti-Spyware

If you dont have and anti-virus, I would recommend AVG Free

If you have an "always-on" broadband connection I would recommend a firewall such as Zone Alarm

One more suggestion would be to switch to the Firefox Web Browser.

When I'm cleaning someones computer thats infested with crapware, the first thing I do is install FF, even if they dont intend to keep it, becuase it will prevent all the popups that IE lets through, then I grab everything I need offline, updates and apps/patches and if they still want to use Internet Exploder, I uninstall it afterwards. It just makes things alot easier.

I hope this helps. :)

Are you posting from the same computer with the issues? If not, download all the apps listed above, then either burn them to cd or email them to the other comp.

I would definetly patch the OS as quick as I could to all critical updates, if you have XP SP1 borrow someones or order the free XP SP2 cd at least then download all of the new updates.

You may also want to boot to safemode, remove all temp files and folders in
(I am assuming this is an XP OS..)
C:\Documents and Settings\**username here**\Local Settings\Temp
c:\temp
C:\windows\Temp
c:\windows\downloaded program files

Check add remove programs for any thing that looks like crap.

Open IE > Tools >internet options
Clear your cache

Reboot

Definetly get adaware and spybot and a firewall immediatly!!!!

Once you do and you seem to be running a bit better post a HJT log for review.

I am still having trouble. I ran the MS anti spyware, spybot, my antivirus, and everything said it was cleared out. As soon as I got back on my DSL everything started to pop back up. And can you also refresh my memory on hot to boot in safemode, its been a long time.

To boot in safe mode tap F8 before windows loads.

****

While connected to the intenet with all explorer windows closed (including my computer, IE, search etc..)

Run spybot and UPDATE it, scan. fix

Do the same with Adaware.

Get a firewall quickly

Also..
Get and run HJT (hijackthis)
http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/

Push the top button after running it, copy the entire log into this thread for review.
there may be a worm/trojan that they cant fix, this might help find it.

If you can get online I would suggest you do an online scan.

Also note if a system has a deep worm that others cant remove like the latest bube mofo then it needs specialized treatment.

This particular bug adds code to explorer.exe, in hjt it is defined by the delprots items....
If you have this bug it will install over 100 malware items on your system from keyloggers to adware.

Even if you reinstall note that all of your passwords have probably been compromised and should be changed if you have reinstalled or are sure you are free of the issue.
