Its either the phone line, the wiring, the modem or a virus. I would first try to rule out the wiring, the modem and the phone line in that order.

Does your laptop have a modem? Does it work OK from your friend's location? If it does, that would rule out the phone line and wiring.

Next try re-seating the modem two or three times, and double check the phone and modem connections. Jiggle these connections looking for loose contact. You also might try putting a known good modem in that computer see if the problem persists.

Let us know what you find, are there other ideas out there?

Sorry for the hassle, but your email was intercepted because the computer thinks it's spam... once you click the link above, you'll never be bothered again, since I'll know you're an ok sender in the future.

I received something similar. There were probably half a dozen emails on my computer this morning of extremely questionable nature. Somebody's been busy.

I think there are more than ever around. I get some every day but on Monday got 53 dodgy emails. None got me but boy I am I getting sick of this. There are some hackers out there who have too much time on their hands and an evil view of the world.

20-30 a day from just one account. The other all have some sort of SPAM/anti-virus filtering on them at the ISP. I don't want to know what ends up in there...
