I am not looking forward to having to use Windows 10 and am now faced with having to use & protect it from nasty's and ransmoware. For years I have used AVG, Malwarebytes, CCleaner and Super Anti Spyware all FREE and never had an issue with nasty's as long as I didn't do risky browsing etc.

I know a full featured anti virus utility along with some of the others above is better protection but I was wondering since I will be using Windows 10 if I can get by with either Avast (free) or AVG (free) plus those above and still protect the PC adequately?

I understand Windows 10 already comes with an anti virus or is it something else? If it does along with some of the free utilities mentioned above would work just as good as a paid version? The problem I have is I have 3 computers I need to protect and I am looking to save a few bucks if I can.

For a paid anti virus utility I have been looking at Kaspersky Internet Security 2016 $26.99 (download) not from Kaspersky Made in Russia  :o PDT_Armataz_01_23 PDT_Armataz_01_24 PDT_Armataz_01_27  :o

Bitdefender.

New Egg has Kaspersky Internet Security 2016 for 3 PC's for $79.99

Did some research on PC Matic and I don't like what I have read about it.

The Windows 'essentials' and firewall from MS do provide at least minimal security needs. But a purchased full-featured product is always best. AVG protects my three active systems, the #4 system is off-line but still used. For a three suite package, less than $60.00 USD per year. Not only anti-virus protection, but root kit detection and Email/identity shields. Other brands may be similar in features and price.
A daily AV update and full scan are best for detection of any infections.

Which version of AVG are you using............. I have 4 PC's. 3 laptops and a desktop. two of which and possibly a third I will need to protect.

All three are on 2250 version update. Antivirus, firewall, link scanner, Email scanner, identity protection, other features.
But AVG is my personal favorite. Other brands may be more favored by other users. Some have a more 'user friendly' interface or 'skin'.
Initial cost for one program may be about half or more of the multiple suite package.

My 'daily driver' has the 2012 issue, still 100% valid.. but not upgraded to latest GUI. Another system has the 2014 issue. The third system has the 2015 issue. Two systems update and scan daily, my 'backup' once weekly. Two systems still have XP on them. When XP is declared "dead and buried", then maybe I will upgrade to a newer OS.

XP is on life support for a few enterprise customers. For the end-user it is dead and gone now. I too have a system lurking around here, but soon that will be going 7 or some flavour linux
