Floating Speaker Icon on Desktop

A client has a floating speaker icon on his desktop pc. He had this same issue several years ago, and I managed to delete it, but now, I don't recall how to fix it.
I updated/ran Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware and ZoneAlarm Internet Security and this found other issues which were fixed, but this floating speaker icon still persists.

Does anyone recall how to remedy this?

Looks like his monitor is saying there's no signal or the onboard sound is reporting no speakers connected. Doesn't look like malware to me...

I agree with Evasive. Either its something built into the monitors software/firmware, or you have a third party application that handles audio and its showing this icon.
If you are not sure what it is, you could try disabling the startup apps from MSCONFIG and see if that fixes it. If not, then its probably built into the monitors software/firmware

The computer's audio is fine, no problems; checked all settings.
The Samsung LCD monitor has no problems, and has never had any audio input.
I don't see any third-party audio programs anywhere, either.

This icon is on the left side of the screen, and it moves up and down at 2-second intervals to 4 spots, then reverses and goes upwards, repeating forever.
The icon is transparent and you can see desktop icons underneath it.

I believe that it was an 'audio' problem before, but don't recall what I did to fix it.
Will keep you posted.

I'll keep snooping around.
Thanks for your assistance.

have you uninstalled the audio driver, disabled the soundcard or onboard sound in device manager, rebooted, and reinstalled sound driver after rediscovery?

what is the audio device? intel soundmax?

Samsung LCD triggered something:
http://forums.cnet.com/7723-13973_102-3 ... -ln52a750/

It's because the monitor is set muted and not to volume level 0. I don't know if it has an option not to show the icon when set muted yet. Good luck on that one.

Yep. You guys are right! Now I recall.........it IS the software on the LCD monitor itself. Somehow the client "muted" the sound causing the muted speaker icon to "float" up and down the screen.
Haaaa!!!!!!

This time, I wrote this "technical" info down for future use.
Thanks again.

In what menu is it located?

And thanks for confirming my hunch. I have a Samsung TV at home which does the same thing, that's why...

Blame the "new age programmers" for such nuisance issues. They think that everyone has the 'latest and greatest' of equipment, and every feature should be optimized!
The speakers on most monitors are mediocre at best.. unless the screen size is more than 32"!
My daughter's family has a 60" LCD 'wall' TV. The speakers in its housing are tinny.. with no real body to bass. They had a similar problem with muted sound. Built-in monitor speakers? Convenience, maybe.. but practical, not so much.
The monitor's menu should have several fields of choice, as to settings and preferences. The owner's manual may not disclose all features and use. Check the Web for problems and solutions.
