pesky viruses

Postby cmpapac » Sun Dec 28, 2008 11:58 am

My computer is a little sick right now. Some programs were accidentally downloaded and I have browser windows popping up now. Threre were about 10 diffrent viruses downloadee some how. I sent a pice of each virus back to avg for analysis. I am still having problems though.
I ran the hijack this software and now am just seeking a little help. Here is the read me file from my CPU analysis

Ensure your anti-virus is up to date, and that the Firewall is active.
Might help to restart in 'safe' mode, and do a complete viral scan. But first turn off the Windows 'restore' feature. If you don't then on the next normal boot Windows will undo all your efforts. Turn the 'restore' feature back on only after you are certain that the system is clean.
AdAware from is an effective means of removing those tattle cookies and adware. But you also have to ensure that Registry entries are removed.. which Hijack This can effectively do. But if the wrong actions are taken, then the OS may suffer failures. Best to back up the Registry before any editing.
If some files can't be deleted, it is because the OS considers them 'active'. Only after removing their execution links and a few reboots can they be removed.
I notice that you have the [O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Motive SmartBridge] C:\PROGRA~1\SBCSEL~1\SMARTB~1\MotiveSB.exe ] listed.. which is a notorious "helper" browser add-on. The program's folder has an uninstall process. It is just a useless 'tour guide'!

By now, you should have upgraded your AVG to the version 8.0.. as the older 7.5 won't be viable after Dec. 31. Lots of new features, plus anti-rootkit and adware scanner.
F@H.. to solve mankind's maladies.. in our lifetimes!
