At one point the version that was mixed with cocaine was called 7X and used at a headache medicine aswell. It was legal and something that could be bought over the counter.

hmmm 7x, did some searching for an article that i ran into while surfing the web a number of years ago (when it was very new and exciting- did maximal searches for endless hours!!! original impetus was to advance my knowledge- then i got a $150 bill from compuserve- it was time to ditch it in favor of a flat fee program!!!), yet haven't been able to locate the one specific (the actual specific article) that stated that coca was actually referred to as coco- they actually listed the formula, but i did another search after your post w/ ref to 7x, which yielded a more thorough history of coke (and a formula as well w/ coco listed- should suffice!):

When people speak of "The Secret Formula" they actually mean the ingredient called "7X", a mixture of fruit-oils and spices that gives the syrup its specific taste. It seems to be very important to the Coca-Cola Company to keep its formula secret
