What can you do with your PC these days...

Postby Mr T » Sat May 10, 2014 2:35 am

So sat there thinking the other day, with the usual headline of Tablets and Smartphones are ruling the world and the PC is dead etc etc, what can a PC do a tablet/smartphone cannot or even a laptop...

On my PC's I can:
A)Game, play most games at a medium to high resolution. Yeah sometimes its a bit inconvenient upgrading and tweaking stuff when a game runs badly, but the expereince is better than most consoles.. However consoles are good for the quick start and are loads cheaper...
B) watch films and TV's...
C) Rip music etc so I have backups... EASY TO BACKUP anything on a pc..
D) Safely surf the web.. WIFI and 3G/4G still has inherent security issues.. I can tweak my browser to what I want, I can alter my levels of security..
E)Control my LAN
F)Virtualize operating systems... Mess about with operating systems..
G) Program/Script... Always an education...

And thats just some of it...

The PC is dead - long live the PC... My a**e, the PC is alive and kicking...
I have been programming on computers since the ZX81.
I am an apprentice trained Electronics Engineer with qualifications to back it up.
I have been repairing computers since 1996.
Yet to some people I still know nothing...

I am with you 100%, Mr T.. The "PC" will never die! Tablets and 'smart' phones have their place, but will never be as robust and versatile as a regular computer. Even a budget laptop outperforms the tablets and similar.
F@H.. to solve mankind's maladies.. in our lifetimes!

Soon we will upgrade to thin clients in the office. Out of 1500 systems already about 200 are marked as specials, for CAD, geodetic research, digitizing documents, reproduction section... Even with HDX available on the VDI, still that is not enough to completely eliminate the humble power desktop
