Most consumer-oriented linuxes these days are easy to install and use. You really should try some. For the usage they need (webbrowsing/email/word processor) it's similar enough imho.

what is the best 64-bit Linux distro? I know many people have different preferences, and new ones are coming out regularly, but opinions?

Actually I'd have to say F*** Ubuntu. I really needed a distro over the weekend for troubleshooting, I had limited time, and I just needed a Linux Live CD that would give me a terminal. Ubuntu was the quickest to download so I chose it.
I am not sure if the latest one has a terminal somewhere but I couldn't find it. Seriously ticked me off.
Went back to Knoppix. And had to waste another day fixing the problem.

I did start my Linux "adventure" with Red Hat, some 15+ years ago. Was not an easy system to set up, but eventually got the "hang" of it. Had a pair of eyes on the screen that followed the mouse movements.. for amusement.
Not into much of computing activity today, except maintaining my own systems.

Great. How hard would an icon have been?

Same with windows and Mac OSX, no terminal icon... Its the future... If you run linux, its always CTRL+ALT+T... you can then pin it to the sidebar...

This feels like Windows 95 all over again when they got rid of progman. I also hate Windows 8 and its garbage tablet interface.

I use command line all the time..

Get into networking, enterprise style, most of those routers are still CLI only...
