how unique is the cable? they have a whole slew of different 1394 cables at newegg. i was able to find some fancy stuff there before. 9-6 pin stuff and such.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... der=priceD

does the unit power up? i've also seen problems on a couple enclosures i have that the power cable is the problem.

Standard mini USB Firewire cable.. You get two types, male or female...Both look very similar, you need to know which... Likewise the cable looks very similar to a mini USB cable...

Firewire can use plastic or glass fibers for the transmission medium, to transfer data. Or it can use the Cat5E type of Network wiring. The plastic or glass fibers are not as resillient as solid wire, and may crack.. interrupting the data flow.
The only way to check for a bad cable is to test it with another known-working setup. Or substitute a known-good cable on your device.
