40Gb HDD [Maxtor] not formatting

Postby ~PJ~ » Wed Nov 02, 2005 8:27 am

It's been sitting there on XP Pro installation at 0% format for nearly an hour now. It did it before - so I restarted, removed the partition, redid the partition, and started again. No joy.
Brand new drive out of a batch of five - the other four all worked perfectly.

Try it with a win98se bootdisk, FDISK and format... If it does that, try again with winXP... There has been a bad batch of Maxtor 40Gbs out recently...
I have been programming on computers since the ZX81.
I am an apprentice trained Electronics Engineer with qualifications to back it up.
I have been repairing computers since 1996.
Yet to some people I still know nothing...

Can do - but won't that give it a FAT32 rather than NTFS [not that I suppose it matters with a 40Gb]

Not having much luck with this one - sorted the other machine [as per other thread].

Am just doing a fresh boot disk and will try again. Of course, it would be the last of the batch, wouldn't it? No more big HDDs left now

Hmm.
Booted OK from that one.
Went into Fdisk, deleted the non-DOS partition, and am trying to create a primary DOS partition. It verified the drive integrity twice, then asked me if I wanted to use the maximum size and make the partition active [which of course I did] - then stayed there on 0% for about 5 minutes. It's now doing it twice again, but I am starting to wonder about either this drive or this puter.

Annoying. New mobo, vid card RAM as well as HDD which is unusual for me...
