If memory slot pairs have different colors, each color is for a specific channel or bank. You cannot use the paired slots with different colors, as this will not balance the same memory amount into each bank assignment. Use the same color slot in each pair of slots first. Black slots would be secondary module pair installation, red, blue or other would be first. The user manual details this.
Older single-channel memory designs allowed having modules in the same pairs of slots. Newer multi-channel designs need specific module arrangement.

Yes, the design could have both banks of memory in one pair of slots.. but then the circuit traces may be excessively complicated. Many motherboard designs have up to five layers of circuit traces now.

either A1+B1 or A2+B2 or all 4 slots. I have no idea why it was working before with sticks in A1+A2.
