Drivers for any feature or device must meet the current Windows version for WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs) standards. Some driver files are generic, work with most printers. But each model needs a specific driver for optimal performance. There is an embedded ID feature in all newer devices, which responds to a "roll call" to positively ID the device, then selects the proper driver set for use. The install of drivers may appear identical, but have different files. Follow the manufacturer's setup recommendations. Some devices require connection before the driver install, others connected after the driver install.

Whatever they all can be massaged into a silent install without the printer being connected. Been there, done that.

The only exceptiosn are some all-in-one network conected beasts that seem to store the netbios name of the firstly connected system somewhere. :o
