Replacing CMOS Battery Concerns

Post by meppwc »

It was recommended to me that replacing my CMOS battery would eliminate the MUI error I keep getting when the computer starts.
Assuming that is correct, if I turn off the computer and replace the battery, won't I lose all of my CMOS settings?
If so, how would I be able to retain those settings so that they could be re-entered at bootup?
Or is there a concern here?

Re: Replacing CMOS Battery Concerns

Replacing the BIOS or CMOS battery while the system is active is very dangerous, the battery may short motherboard contacts and cause a total failure. But if the system is off, less chance of doing damage. But keep the PSU on the mains, so the +5v stand-by powers the BIOS, CMOS and USB needs. Then there will be no interruption in power, and all settings should remain. Still, I would take a small patch of cloth, cut a hole in the center the size of the battery holder, as an 'apron' around the battery for safety.
That battery is only a backup for when the PSU is not powered by the mains. At all other times, the PSU provides needed power.
