I have installed a 1TB SATA hard drive (not for my system partition which is on the IDE primary master) into a Windows XP PC. According to the HDD Life software it's health is 96% and performance is 99%. However it keeps hanging while I'm browsing content on it (often for over 30 seconds), and often while I'm moving files onto it I get a Windows delayed write error, telling me the data has been lost. Is this likely to be a SATA controller card error? The SATA drive is connected to a two port PCI card. I believe the controller is a Silicon Image SIL3114.

Set the default for hard drive time to shut down as "never". Do this in the Control Panel, Power Options.
For any mains powered system, it is best the hard drive does not power down needlessly. That means more wear sooner. For a laptop, better it does shut down after a short time to conserve battery power.
Check the Disk management status of the drive. It should be part of the system, and have a healthy partition.
Each SATA drive is connected to the PSU with a 5-wire power cable? Should be an orange wire there, part of the hot-swap intent. It is safe to use the standard 4-wire power cable with a Molex to SATA adapter. But then no hot-swap feature.

Power options were set to "never" for shutting down hrd drives. I've checked the drive in Disk Management and it said "Errors" on the left. The Drive is set as a Dynamic Disc, and all partitions said "At risk". I right-clicked on the left portion and it gave me the option to "reactivate", which I did. All partitions now say "Healthy". However I am concerned as to the nature of the "risk". It was not specific about the problem. The drive is new, has never been overheated and has no bad sectors.

Can I reset the drive from dynamic to basic? Would this be recommended?

Set the drive to basic and format it in NTFS not FAT32. Is your main C drive formatted in NTFS or FAT32?

The other things to do is to reseat or replace the SATA cable and reseat the controller card. If the PCI card is sharing resoursces with another card it may also cause this issue, esp LAN cards.

have you looked at a newer driver for your add in card? a lot of times you can find a better driver (or newer firmware) on the manufacturers website that works out some kink that may come with the driver found on the disk that came with the card.
worth a shot to check the site.

could also be some power supply problem, or a bad caps problem.
how old is the motherboard and power supply?

seems to be a driver or sata data cable related issue
