help my computer is turning off when I don't want it to

Postby soulfire21 » Wed Nov 13, 2002 4:59 pm

I loaded my os Windows XP and got it running.
I logged on and a short time later the stupid thing just turned itself off and restarted all on its own.
Now that is cool and all, but I don't want it to do this especially in the middle of a game.
It does this all the time all at different times, so I know that this is not a one time fluke.
Any suggestions as to what the problem will help greatly.

Thank you

Are you getting a blue screen first? If so what does the error message say? Is is specific to any program/s?

I've had seen this happen for two reasons:
1) dodgy power supply.
2) dodgy memory module.

There's probably a thousand other explanations too, but that's two I've seen. You can use memtest-86 ( http://www.memtest86.com ) to test the memory, for the power supply, you could plug in someone elses overnight and run a burn-in test...
