Post subject:  motherboard wont boot (original huh)

I posted this problem yesterday but it  got deleted. I understand someone kindly replied to it - could you please reply again - thanks.

Basic problem:

Mobo - QDI Titanium 1
CPU's - tried 133 through to 233MMX
Memory - 64MB
Video Card - Trident 19440
HDD - Western Digital 2.1GB

I'm trying to build a PC from parts taken from other PC's. I have tested all the parts independently apart from the mobo.
Problem: - mobo wont boot up. There's power to the CPU fan and keyboard. CPU gets warm within 5 seconds (when no fan attached). No beep sounds from speaker. When HDD is not attached to mobo then it powers up. When I attach ide cable from HDD to mobo then it doesn't power up. Is this significant? Have checked and rechecked jumpers but mobo comes with Easy Start software for setting CPU speed etc so shouldn't be necessary.

I'm assured mobo was working. Is there anything else I can try?

First off
Fit a fan or your cpu will fry.
Check that your bios is detecting your hdd set it to auto
Check that your IDE cable is attatched to the hdd the right way round
Try removing all the jumpers from the hdd WD HDD can be a pain in the Ar*e to set up.

Hi Tau

Thanks for that. I would add that:

1. I do fit a fan to the CPU but to see if the CPU is receiving power it helps to feel if it gets warm - I then turn off before it gets any hotter.
2. All mobos should boot without the HDD being attached so HDD jumpers shouldn't be relevant.
3. Tried HDD cable both ways
4. It's not just WD - I've tried a Seagate drive as well.

I have had a similar problem in the past, but with cd-rom on ide 2.
It turns out to be that the cable is not positioned correctly eg red stripe to pin one. It may well be the same with yours only its the hdd thats giving you grief, make sure that the red stripe on the cable goes to pin 1 one the board as well as the hdd.

Thanks Tau but I've also been there so I'm aware of that problem. I've checked the pin 1 connection at both ends a few times. I'm starting to think the mobo must be duff - i just cant think of anything else to try.

Does the thing boot without the HDD attatched?
