In WinXP the DOS is a shell provided by CMD.EXE. It's a program meant to 'simulate' MS-DOS. It does a basically good job except for one thing. It lacks the ability to use or fully support 16bit / 32bit real mode. WinXP is a fully 32bit OS but it doesn't support DOS because it expects you to work in the GUI for everything instead of a DOS environment.

QBasic... Should work on XP. If you set it's program properties to be Win98 compatible it should run ok. But then again, it's just providing an emulated program execution. You would need a DOS BASIC compiler like Microsoft's PDS to turn the programs into stand alone executables...
