Mapping a network drive from a remote PC? (SSH/VPN/MSTSC)

Post by gamepyrate »

G'day. I have been trying to find a way to connect my desktop in the States to my computer here in the UK so that I can easily do file sharing, seamlessly and as fast as possible over the internet, as if it were on a local network. Windows XP on the one in the states; windows server 2003 in the UK.

I have been using Putty and SSH to tunnel in to the remote computer so that I can use Remote Desktop or whatever, but I have been confused about how to use this same tool to tunnel the shared drives on the computer over here, to make it seem as if they are on just a local intranetwork.

Basically, I'm willing to hear what anybody thinks about what to use (free) for further linking up these two computers across thousands of miles. If it involves SSH, that would be great.
Can anybody help?
