Convert Wireless Internet signal to cable ethernet signal

Postby kevinloh » Sat Aug 02, 2008 7:49 pm

A member in my forum asked this relevant question.

He wants to know how to convert his wireless signal from a router gathered from his wireless adapter and output it to the LAN port of the same PC and go through LAN switches to be shared with other computers within a LAN network.

Wireless Router --> Wireless Adapter --> Output to LAN -->Cable connected to Switch -->Manual IP assigned-> Shared amongst other PCs

Yup that is the hardware my friend is looking for, but I found a way too using Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), however the PC must be on 24/7 to share the internet 24/7. Here is what I suggested :

Install wireless adapter and Ethernet Adaptor on a 24/7 gateway PC running windows XP.

Under Network Connections, since we want to output the signal to LAN port, we right click Wireless Adapter and click Properties, click Advanced Tab and place a checkbox under Allow other network users to connect through this Internet Connection.

The LAN port will then be automatically be assigned a local IP address such as 192.168.1.1 and then can output the signal to the LAN port.

However since we are sharing it to more than one computer, we need to purchase a router/switch and plug in the Ethernet cable to the switch. Perhaps change a setting or two in the Switch settings and you should be able to share the internet across LAN.

you don't need a router there, the address translation is already done by ICS. You don't need to manually set IP-adresses on the shared LAN either since ICS also does DHCP if I'm not mistaken...
We hate rut, but we fear change.

you need to take into consideration the amount of PCs you plan on running through ICS and the ip addressing / subnet mask as ICS uses its own and you cannot modify it.
