Back to folding.

Post by Comp_parter »

:mb_Dog:: Just fired up some systems to start earning points again. :mb_Dog::

I have an old AMD Phenom quad core
cranking out W/U's with the Chrome browser client

I have and 8 core AMD FX cranking out units
and
I have a 6 core AMD FX cranking them out too.

Thinking about my old P4 Prescott machine too, dunno maybe...

I have a machine that has an Athlon XP 2800 processor
256 MB DDR
80 GB Seagate 7200 rpm ...

Wondering if they are worth the Watts....

Everybody is GPU-folding these days so it's good to see someone go oldschool...

One of my rigs has a Geforce GT 740 and what's odd to me is that it gets work units of a much higher value.
Is that the norm these days?

I have a Radeon 570 RX on the way, may be for folding or may be for mining. I am itching to see if I can make some nickles mining crypto.

Mining crypto of any sort is not viable at this moment in time due to a bad market fluctuation against the cost of running the mine or buying the components (that's why the cost of graphics cards where artificially high but are now coming down to a realistic price). I have seen a room with a bank of machines, 8 graphics cards on each machine (and I am not talking cheap graphics cards here, talking Radeon 580's at £250 - £300 apiece). I am very pleased as this means graphics cards have become affordable again.
When starting mining, it takes at least a month (depending on your setup) to recoup the cost of electricity and after that a long time to make any money. Then you have the massive fluctuation in value. Then you have the unregulated shady bankers and dealers in it. And so on..
And on a side note, be wary of 2nd hand cards, especially if they have been in a running crypto mine as their life span may be markedly decreased...

Edit:
case in point: Link....
I have been programming on computers since the ZX81.
I am an apprentice trained Electronics Engineer with qualifications to back it up.
I have been repairing computers since 1996.
Yet to some people I still know nothing...

Thanks for the heads up. It all seemed too good to be true. Once again, I am late to the party. Oh well, the Radeon should give my basement folder a good boost.
