an older socket 2011-3 board with two xeon e5-2620's beats the hell out of new socket 3467 mobo with two xeon silver 4110's.
I turned on 16 threads for each system last night letting both of them run for more than 12 hours, and the old system avg was 4500 points, the new system 3300!

not a complete apples to apples, as the new system had 32 gigs of ran, and the older one has 64 gigs... also the new system has a k4000 gpu, and the older one has an m2000.
not that I was trying to measure gpu performance... but I wonder if the new system took performance away fromt the cpu''s somehow more than the older one?

I've heard this news about intel having some bug lately? could this be a factor? both os's are win10... although I think the old system is not patched up to the latest creator's update, and the new system is (1703 vs 1709).

any thoughts?

Compare L1 and L2 cache levels on the CPU die. More cache memory, a bit faster. No constant reading back to the program for instructions.
The xeon e5-2620 had two versions.. one with 15 M, the other with 20 M cache levels.. plus a 10 MHz speed difference.
The xeon silver 4110 has total cache down around 11M, but similar speed.
All other features and hardware being near identical, the CPU could be a reason.

yeah, I understand what you're saying. they are similar cpu's as far as cache's, actual core count, frequency etc, but some minor differences.
upshot is turning on more threads to aim at virtual cores does make the 4110 a better workhorse, but not by much as I would have thought.

less threads, though, the old platform still is very good, and somehow better.
