New to the folding family

Postby paintballpunk43 » Thu Feb 21, 2008 8:54 pm

Hi everybody seems pretty nice on this forum so I figured you guys wouldn't mind me bugging you with a few new to folding questions. I just installed 5.03 earlier this afternoon and my Anthlon X2 6400 at 3.2ghz is only running @ 50% in Everest. My question is that my comp has only done 180/1500 after being on all day today; Is this good progress or do I need to tweek my setup?

My Username is FLuX43:
and this is what I get when I go to the website

First of all, thanks for joining the team, you're very welcome here :) . I'll give you some tips on setting the machine up to maximise the output later today (unless someone else jumps in first). The 50% that Everest is showing means that only one core is running Folding@Home.

Points are only given out when a Work Unit is completed, the stats usually update within a couple of hours. Wu's vary in length, so its quite likely that the one you are working on is worth a lot of points. If you get a chance could you please post your log. Once again welcome onboard. :)

[19:45:40] - Working with standard loops on this execution.
[19:45:40] - Previous termination of core was improper.

That explains why its slow. You have to shut folding down properly or you'll get that message. Use Ctl-C if using the Console, Use quit if you have the graphical. Standard loops means that any boosters like sse or sse2 will not be enabled and that really slows things down.

A new partner on our folding team is always welcome!
Here is a link for the Console commands.. http://folding.stanford.edu/console-userguide.html
Best to start the program on its first run with the command {typical} [F@H504-console -configonly] and do what is needed. Set all your options, then save. The program will end, then you restart and it will DL all the needed working files and process runs.
If you have 24/7 connection to a Web link, no need to set "ask before connecting" as [no]. Your WUs will automatically be sent.

But if you are using a progress monitor, such as EM iii, that has to be first closed down before the F@H processes are. Otherwise, file corruption will result.. and the WU will probably restart from scratch.

I run two instances of the F@H processes on my P4 Prescott.. each folder is named uniquely, on separate partitions. They are non-service launch features, and I manually launch them from desktop links. Same with the EM iii. That way, if I ever need to, I can totally shut down the services. If launched as a service process, they will never completely shut down.. until the OS terminates the session.. or you use the Task Manager to end the processes.

But no one is immune from those minor glitches on the AC mains. Less than 1/2 second is all the reserve a PSU has.. and the PC may reboot. Other electronic gear may never notice those glitches. A UPS or line-tamer would protect against such infrequent glitches.
F@H.. to solve mankind's maladies.. in our lifetimes!

You have 2 choices, the best setup to maximise your points would be The SMP core. For this to work your computer has to have a password, if it doesn't, you need to create one, then using TweakUi (free from Microsoft) you can if you wish set it to Auto log on. However, you do need your computer to be on for 12-16 hours a day as they need to be returned within 4 days. The alternative is to run 2 versions of the Console version. Pretty easy to setup. Just make a new folder, copy the Conslole file into it, create a desktop shortcut and add the flag -local to it then run it. On first running it'll ask for user name, team number and when it reaches Change advanced settings answer yes, then accept te defaults until it reaches Machine ID and set this to 2. You'll also need to add the -local flag to your original console.

Hope this makes sense :)
