Voice while playing

Postby Phillipste » Fri Jan 10, 2003 12:29 pm

I have been playing a lot of Unreal Tournament 2003 and Team Fortress on-line. Unfortenly I can never coordinate with my team mates and I don't have time to join a clan. I was wondering if I should get one of those Voice Commander type doohickies where I can talk to my team mates.

Has anyone ever tried these and do you have any recommendations?

I don't know about the voice commander device you speak of, but all you need is a microphone. You can even buy cheap headsets from most computer places (radio shack too?) that will do the trick. Then all you need is a program like Roger Wilco, that allows you to communicate with other players. The only downside is any voice program/device will require you to know the group you want to talk to. And this mostly pertains to Clan's because clan's are one group of people who are most likely to play with each other time and time again. This makes it much easier to coordinate the voice server instead of hoping the game has a coordinated server that you can use.

Do they have clans for old people with slow reflexes who can only afford to practice once a week.

I'm sure there are plenty out there that will let you join, or maybe just be a regular player with them. Almost every time I play a game online I either see people begging to join a clan, or people begging others to join theirs.

I do not know first hand, but I think a few games have voice built into them. I believe counterstrike is one of them.

Tribes 2 and IL2 Sturmovik have it, but it doesn't work that well. It's very hard to understand what players are saying.

There is always:

I found this one worked verywell. You have to run a server, but it's pretty easy to set up.

Teamspeak has always worked well for me and my buds. It uses very little bandwidth and, in my opinion, runs better than any of the others (I have tried all the others: RW, Battlecom, ICQ, & even MSN). I have had better luck with the older version of TS than I have the new 2.0. I never have figured out how to get the server working right.

all you need is a microphone.

You'll need headphones too or you'll have a feedback nightmare (at least, anyone talking to you will)

I never have had any problems with hearing the voice coming through my speakers nor has any of my friends. It could possibly be the way they have their stuff setup.

TeamSpeak works very well for my clan and I. We use it all the time even if we aren't in a game. The only problems we run into with it is it disconnects you sometimes (although there is an auto-reconnect feature that you can enable), and it gets a little choppy unless you either have a dedicated computer to run the server on, or have abundant resources. TS is the best program we have found for communication though.
